More amazing research about acupuncture: This time, helping addicts

The research on acupuncture never ceases to amaze me. I know it works. I'm a Research Psychologist by formal training so I wouldn't be using a medicine, teaching a medicine, that I didn't know works. I see it work every day! That's why it is so affirming when I read articles that expound on the wonderfulness (made up word) of Chinese medicine/Acupuncture. Ok, articles that demonstrate it's effectiveness.

Anyway, this most interesting information was published in Neural Regeneration Research (Vol. 9, No. 3, 2014) and basically said that acupuncture normalized the area of the brain that is damaged by heroin use. In my lectures about acupuncture I always point out its use to treat brain injuries, central nervous conditions, etc. and this study supports that idea. Rongjun Zhang and his research team explain that heroin use can damage more than one area of the brain and that its continued use makes that damage irreversible. But, they found that a brain structure called the ventral tegmental area that was damaged by addiction (in rats but that's a beginning!) became normalized after acupuncture treatment. Other brain functions - what they called the "expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor" also increased after acupuncture. This sort of basic research is so important to all medicines and how many treatments for humans begin. And I treat addiction in my practice already - but this research is fascinating and confirming my work.
