Old person smell … acupuncture can help that!

I think the "old person smell" thing that's been in the news lately is fascinating in that it seems to be related to the improper degeneration of fat cells. My take on it is that we don't metabolize the fatty cells so quickly as we age leading to the odor. Damn. The researcher in me wonders if that smell is less potent in FIT older people because they might have fewer fat cells that could get smelly or because their fat cells metabolize faster. Acupuncture can make your digestion and metabolism work better so that your systems stay in tune and working at their best.  Just a thought …..

The original reference is old but the media just picked up lately on the smell thing it seems. Reference: April 2001 issue of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, article entitled: "2-Nonenal, Newly Found in Human Body Odor Tends to Increase with Aging". They found that the concentration of 2-nonenal tended to increase with the age of the subjects and determined that that 2-nonenal is generated by the oxidative degradation of omega-7 unsaturated fatty acids, such as palmitoleic acid and vaccenic acid, found on the skin surface.

Itchy? Acupuncture works for that!

A study in the journal Allergy (Vol. 67, Issue 4, pp 566-573) concluded that acupuncture "significantly reduces itching in patients who suffer from atopic dermatitis". The researchers compared acupuncture with drug therapy and while both reduced itching, acupuncture was the most effective! Almost always there is an internal reason for itchy skin and part of what I do as a Chinese medicine practitioner/acupuncturist is figure that out and treat said cause.

Needle free Traditional Chinese medicine treatments: cold laser and gua sha

At Lucas Acupuncture I offer needle-free Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments too!

Even though I am both a good and a gentle acupuncturist (ask any of my patients), some people still shy away from needles. For those of you who fit into that category there are cold laser and gua sha.  For pain and/or stiffness I offer gua sha and cold laser treatment.  Cold laser is also used to achieve cosmetic results, i.e., wrinkle reduction and collagen enhancement.  For cold laser cosmetic treatments, I recommend two treatments a week for 6 to 8 weeks. The first treatment cold laser for cosmetic purposes is 45 minutes long ($85); follow up cold laser for cosmetic purposes are 20 - 30 minutes ($40).  

Gua sha feels SO good … it is the ancient art of moving stuck qi and blood (like from an injury) so that the pain goes away. The first treatment of gua sha is 30 to 45 minutes long ($85) with gua sha follow up appointments for pain 20 - 25 minutes ($35).  Cold laser treatments for pain: initial $85, follow up $35.

Cellulite? I offer treatment using essential oils and either cupping or gua sha.  I recommend two treatments a week for 3 to 4 weeks then one a week for a few weeks followed up by about once a month.  Initial treatment is about 45 to 50 minutes long ($85) with followups 15 minutes ($35).

Chinese medicine: The diagnosis is the key to successful treatment!

We all know that acupuncture has a great reputation for healing pain - both acute and chronic - but especially chronic pain that modern medicine can't get a handle on.  Because our society is so focused on "the pill for the pain"most people don't realize that there is a great deal of research demonstrating that acupuncture treats pain successfully.  It is one of the most natural treatments for pain.  Another factor that most people don't know is that the key to successful treatment of pain using acupuncture isn't necessarily just the placement of needles.  It's the pulse diagnosis.  Your Chinese medicine practitioner can see from  your pulses what the cause of the pain is, what meridians/channels are blocked, which are weak, which don't have enough qi flowing through them, etc.  You should expect pulse diagnosis when you see your acupuncturist.  Otherwise, how is he or she making your diagnosis? Certainly when you come in to see an acupuncturist with a "frozen shoulder" the acupuncturist can make the decision to stick some needles in trigger points (called ashi points in Chinese medicine) or find some attachments or sore spots to needle. BUT the real key is to see how the qi is flowing - or not - to that area for it to heal quickly and completely.  I also love to use the therapy called gua sha to treat pain. It is a gentle (or sometimes vigorous) "scrubbing" of the painful area and the surrounding area with a gua sha tool that moves the qi and blood stagnation away so that the area can heal.  It feels great!
